“How do you talk to the future?” asked State Representative Kevin Killer from Pine Ridge, SD, at the Midwest Rural Assembly. “You hope for what it will be and work toward that.” A lively, committed group of 120 people did just that at the network’s second gathering on August 16-17 in South Sioux City, NE. They got to know each other, discussed critical issues, and developed clear action steps.
Key to rural prosperity is reversing the trend of exporting young people. Five young leaders focused on how rural communities can instead welcome and sustain the next generation. Their priorities:
• Helping young adults get started in sustainable agriculture
• Promoting a broader vision of health
• Preserving working lands
• Providing more educational options in rural areas
• Promoting asset development for people with low incomes
• Attracting young people who care about the environment
Peer experts hosted 22 learning roundtables to share ways of addressing these priorities and many others. In the coming year, the MRA plans to create new and ongoing networking tools and provide easier access to rural community research, stories, local experts, funding opportunities, and new initiatives in the region. Stay tuned!
